The Ice-/Dark-type Chien-Pao has great stats and moves befitting of a Legendary Pokémon that make it a primary damage dealer during Tera Raid fights.

Often during the Tera Raid battles of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the strongest creatures players may bring to the fight are Legendary Pokémon, including the Dark-/Ice-type Chien Pao. As one of the four Ruinous Pokémon players find during the postgame, Chien-Pao hosts extremely high Speed and Attack stats when compared to other pocket monsters. Therefore, players looking for a reliable source of damage that acts swiftly during the challenging Tera Raids of high star difficulty may find a lot of success by adding Chien-Pao to their team.

Building Chien-Pao for Tera Raids should account for the proper move list highlighting the Pokémon’s strengths and which held item needs to be attached to the Legendary that affects the battle. Players could also be aware of which type of matchups work best in Chien-Pao’s favor, especially since Tera Raids feature the new Tera types in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet that change traditional interactions. Chien-Pao’s Ability, Sword of Ruin, actively cuts the Defense stat of all Pokémon on the battlefield by 25%, making it an excellent tool for weakening the Tera Raid Pokémon right as the battle starts.

After players beat the Glaseado Gym, they receive the Technical Machine (TM) for Ice Spinner, the core move in Chien-Pao’s arsenal for Tera Raids. Ice Spinner destroys terrain that a Tera Raid boss might be using to give itself an advantage and sports 80 Power and 100% Accuracy as an Ice-type attack that gets boosted damage from Chien-Pao’s Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB). Other offensive attacks, such as Crunch and Sucker Punch, are also bolstered by this system, with the latter being a slight exception by acting only if the opposing Pokémon in the Tera Raid uses a damaging move. Finally, Swords Dance rounds out this list by allowing players to raise Chien-Pao’s Attack even higher for exceptional damage values.

An unfortunate weakness of Chien-Pao involves the Pokémon’s utility as more of a glass cannon, with fragile defenses balancing out its higher Speed and offense. In order to bring out the best of this Legendary without it fainting right away, players may wish to equip the Focus Sash item, which prevents the Pokémon from being knocked out on 1 HP if it was hit with an attack that would otherwise put it out of commission from full health. This allows players to get multiple attacks before Chien-Pao is defeated by a Tera Raid Pokémonwiths a natural advantage against it, such as Cinderace in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

Speaking of advantages, the Ice-/Dark-type nature of Chien-Pao makes it susceptible to certain Pokémon of the Fighting-type with a 4x weakness to moves of that category. Although Chien-Pao does super-effective damage against a variety of types, players should be mindful of which battles the Legendary would be best suited for. Not even the best build for Chien-Pao in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can give it the edge over Tera Raid Pokémon, with attacks designed to trounce it.
